Facebook sets up crisis response page after Las Vegas shooting

Facebook already faces growing pressure in Congress for a full accounting of political ads bought by Russian groups trying to influence the 2016 US election.

Conservative writer Joe Hoft pounced, publishing and then retracting an article about the misidentified man. Police later identified a different person, Stephen Paddock, as the shooter.

As BuzzFeed's Ryan Broderick first pointed out on Twitter, when you entered a Google search for "Geary Danley" this morning, the site displayed links to 4chan's pol (politically incorrect) message board in its Top Stories section wrongly identifying him as the shooter.

He said that the Braves are cooperating with MLB's investigation but that they will have no further comment at this time. This is not the first time an Major League Baseball front office has run afoul of worldwide signing rules.

It's a legitimate question to ask how sources like 4chan would even be considered a viable outlet from which to source information for breaking news. We don't check what people say before they say it, and frankly, I don't think our society should want us to.

While the Gateway Pundit removed the story, the site's White House correspondent Lucian Wintrich criticized and mocked reporters who inquired about how the site published the piece.

The site's evidence for its characterization of Geary Danley was "a review of Danley's Facebook page, where he had liked Rachel Maddow and other liberal or anti-Trump pages". Google hired the founder of 4chan, Christopher Poole, in 2016, though there's no indication that he's involved with the search results that promoted 4chan.

"This should not have appeared for any queries, and we'll continue to make algorithmic improvements to prevent this from happening in the future", the spokesperson said.

In Puerto Rico , where all imports must come by boat or plane, this has caused supplies to the island to come at increased prices. Of the latter, he noted in that USA territory "people working hard".

The falsehoods aren't only about the shooter, his associations and motivations, however.

Facebook said its security staff had seen the post and removed it. "Its removal was delayed by a few minutes, allowing it be screen captured and circulate online", they said.

In a statement, Facebook said, "We are working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen in the first place and deeply regret the confusion this caused".

In a thread titled "Control The Narrative", one poster urged 4chan's members to "push the fact this terrorist was a commie on all social media".

Another right-wing media personality, radio host Wayne Root, immediately blamed Muslims for the shooting in a tweet, calling it a "Clearly coordinated Muslim terror attack". The false claim spread quickly on the Internet.
