Sensex, Nifty Rise As RBI Keeps Repo Rate Steady

The NSE Nifty ruled steady, down 19.40 points - or 0.20 per cent - at 9,895.50.

The BSE market breadth was bullish - 1,478 advances and 1,162 declines. Shares of Shivalik Bimetal Controls are going to witness bonus issue into 1:1 ratio.

The Nifty50 rose by 55.40 points, or 0.56 per cent, to close at 9,914.90 points, while the Sensex closed at 31,671.71 points - up 174.33 points, or 0.55 per cent. Asian stocks gained in holiday-thinned trade.

European shares took a mixed line in the early session.

The broader markets, on the other hand, outperformed the benchmark index.

The PNB and BoB stocks rose 0.39 per cent and 0.22 per cent, respectively.

The markets opened on a slightly positive note on Thursday and stayed rangebound as it held against volatility after the Reserve Bank of India kept key interest rates unchanged on Wednesday. According to the decision by RBI's MPC, the repo rate, at which it lends to the system, will stand at 6 per cent while reverse repo will also continue to be at 5.75 per cent.

BSE Bankex closed at 27,126.98 points, up 44.98 points.

Major Sensex gainers on Thursday were: NTPC, up 1.79 per cent at Rs 170.80; Coal India, up 1.11 per cent at Rs 273; Mahindra and Mahindra, up 0.85 per cent at Rs 1,300; Reliance Industries, up 0.61 per cent at Rs 824.20; and Tata Motors (DVR), up 0.61 per cent at Rs 241.10.

The sectoral indices of NSE settled mixed with Nifty Bank, Nifty Auto, Nifty Fin Service, Nifty FMCG, Nifty IT, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty PVT Bank closing in red with losses up to 0.44% while Nifty Media, Nifty Metal, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Realty ended in green.
