White House is on to a ban on 'bump stocks'

There are now two identical Democrat-authored bills before Congress that would ban bump stocks and other devices that accelerate semiautomatics' rate of fire.

This announcement comes on the heels of a report of a Republican-led bill to ban the sale of bump stocks that is being sponsored in the House of Representatives by Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fl).

The group added: "The NRA believes that devices created to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations".

"We welcome that and would like to be part of that conversation".

Top Democrat, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, urged Ryan to allow a vote on a Democratic bill to ban the devices.

The White House said on Thursday it welcomed efforts by both political parties to address the use of "bump stock" gun accessories, which enable rifles to be turned into rapid-fire weapons, following the Las Vegas mass shooting.

The National Rifle Association (NRA), the powerful pro-gun lobby that threw $21 million behind Donald Trump's presidential candidacy past year, weighed in on the debate for the first time today, calling on the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to review the matter, rather than create new laws. Unfortunately, the first response from some politicians has been to call for more gun control.

NRA's Executive Director Chris Cox told Fox News' Tucker Carlson this week, "We didn't talk about banning anything, we talked about ATF reviewing whether these are compliant with federal law".

The legality of bump stocks could hinge on a "technicality", he said.

"Right now, our focus, as we've said over the last couple of days, is on healing and uniting the country", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Thursday.

Republicans are signaling they're willing to take a modest step on gun control in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre.

Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas gunman, had attached 12 bump stocks to guns in his hotel room, which investigators said helped him carry out the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. That allowed him to spray gunfire into the crowd below much more quickly.

A bump stock is a device that can be attached to the butt of a rifle, allowing it to fire like an automatic weapon. Curbelo told WLRN's Sundialon Wednesday, "I've even spoken to people who are involved in the gun manufacturing business, and they have told me that these things should not be legal".

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, the senior Republican senator from Texas, also told reporters Wednesday that the bump stock issue is worth examining, and that he spoke with Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, about holding a hearing.
