Blade Runner 2049 opens soft with $81.5 million worldwide opening weekend

"Blade Runner 2049" may have convincingly won the U.S. weekend box office, but its actual total was certainly nothing about which to write home. "Blade Runner 2049" is proving to be a very front-loaded film, as the original's cult fanbase packed early screenings while mainstream audiences have been slow to buy tickets.

Sunday's estimated result throws serious doubt onto what had been high hopes for a box office success story.

After making $12.7 million on Friday, including $4 million from Thursday previews, revenue fell 11 percent on Saturday to $11.4 million. Before the weekend, the most conservative tracking estimates had this film matching the $45 million opening earned in 2015 by "Mad Max: Fury Road".

Richard Spencer and white nationalists march with torches AGAIN in Charlottesville
This comes after the demonstrations in August led to the death of protester Heather Heyer . Some gathered later on Saturday but it was after the torch-lit rally had already ended .

Given the film's hefty price tag, Alcon Entertainment, Warner Bros. and Sony are probably reconsidering those sequels Ridley Scott has planned... although box office underperformance doesn't seem to have deterred the filmmaker from continuing his Alien saga. "It" now boasts a cumulative total of $304.9 million.

According to PostTrack, males over 25 represented 50% of the audience and females over 25 were 27%, while males under 25 represented 15% of moviegoers and females under 25 were 8%. "It is a privilege to once again work on a Denis Villeneuve movie and showcase Quebec's talent on this major project", said Sébastien Moreau. "Alcon and Denis made an fantastic movie".

This weekend's other new release, the Kate Winslet and Idris Elba survival thriller The Mountain Between Us, also disappointed, bringing in just $10.1 million in its opening weekend. With an 89 on Rotten Tomatoes, falling slightly from a 98, I thought more would have been made of this stunning film.

Trump says Corker 'begged' him for endorsement; Corker responds
It's an extraordinary back-and-forth bashing on social media between a Republican president and a senator from his own party. Corker quickly issued his own response. "It's a shame the White House has become an adult day care center", Corker wrote .

The fifth weekend of New Line's blockbuster "It" showed plenty of staying power in third place with $9.6 million at 3,197 sites.

The Chinese comedy Never Say Die took $66m globally to top the worldwide box office, pushing Kingsman: The Golden Circle into second place.

Galen Rupp wins Chicago Marathon, snaps 15-year American title drought
I made the mistake in the past of going out a little too hard too soon and you still have a long ways to go for several miles. The women's race was won by Ethiopian world record holder Tirunesh Dibaba, who won in 2 hours 18 minutes and 31 seconds.
