Could Hurricane Nate raise gas prices?

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm had maximum sustained winds early Sunday near 85 miles per hour (140 kph) with weakening expected as it moves inland.

Tropical Storm Nate weakened Sunday after making its second landfall in MS, but remnants from the storm are expected to impact the New York City area.

While the storm is not as strong as both Irma as well as Maria, evacuations had been ordered for areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and parts of before Nate's arrival. It is the fourth hurricane to make landfall this year in the United States in what has been an extraordinary season for tropical cyclones.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards encouraged residents to prepare for Nate as if it were a much stronger storm.

Hurricane Nate slammed into the US Gulf Coast for the second time in hours early Sunday after leaving a trail of death and destruction in Central America.

Through Monday, Nate was expected to bring 3 to 6 inches of rain to the Deep South, eastern Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians.

Hurricane Nate made landfall in southern MS, leaving at least 80,000 residents in multiple Gulf states without power, officials said.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu warned the city's residents on Saturday that the storm could cause severe flooding in some areas. A storm surge warning is in effect for Morgan City, Louisiana to the Okaloosa/Walton County line in Florida.

It had weakened slightly and had maximum sustained winds of 85mph (137kph), according to the National Hurricane Centre.

There was some damage, he said, mainly to homes along the coast that were hit by the storm surge.

The storm knocked out power for more than 100,000 electric customers in MS and Alabama, but no storm-related deaths or injuries were reported in the United States early Sunday. Biloxi's gambling casinos closed early on Saturday.

Mississippi's government said it would open 11 evacuation shelters in areas away from the immediate coast, with buses available for people who can't drive.

Nate killed at least 13 people in Nicaragua, eight in Costa Rica, three in Honduras and one in El Salvador.

The mayor's office lifted a mandatory curfew that had been imposed as a safety measure, saying the hurricane warning for the city was no longer in effect.

The first floor of the parking lot of the Palace Casino also had flooding Saturday night.

Like with previous hurricanes, FEMA and other emergency preparedness agencies are urging residents in the hurricane's path to prepare for what could be days of devastation. Storm surge also flooded Water Street in downtown Mobile and a ground-level causeway across Mobile Bay.

The city did not expect major rainfall totals, in part because Nate was tracking east of the city.
