Clarendon Hills continues tradition with Fire Department open house

Once a home catches fire, families have as little as one or two minutes to escape from the time the smoke alarm sounds. It is crucial to have an escape plan in place for your home. Meanwhile, numerous products and furnishings in today's homes are produced with materials that generate dark, toxic gases when burned, making it impossible to breathe or see within moments.

Along with offering a free lunch to everyone who attended, the open house included a side-by-side demonstration of fire spreading in a room with sprinklers and without. If you aren't sure if your smoke detectors work or how to check them, you can ask a firefighter.

In support of Fire Prevention Week, the OSFM encourages all Kansas households to develop a plan together and practice it. Otherwise, the firefighters will replace the batteries or install a new working alarm, according to Christina Seidel, public education officer for the College Station Fire Department.

Seidel said this is the 10th year the department has featured this event, an initiative which she said is aimed at reducing the number of preventable deaths by fire.

"A home escape plan should be an essential part of your family emergency plan", said DESPP Commissioner Dora B. Schriro.
