Fla. police fatally shoot woman who struck officer

Police said that around 6:15 p.m., the unidentified woman hit two or three vehicles on her way from Ocean Drive to Washington Avenue on 12th Street.

Miami Beach Fire Department spokesman Jorge Linares said the injured officer was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital and is now in a stable condition.

An officer on patrol for the Columbus Day holiday weekend ran over to get the woman to stop - but the driver plowed into him, knocking him off his feet, Oates said.

She then proceeded to drive her auto into another parked vehicle, before being shot by police. The woman was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center where she died.

Per Miami Beach Police department policy, Miami-Dade detectives are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

As the she was fleeing from the crash, she struck another vehicle on Lincoln Drive, police said.

Shay Davis and Monique Teller saw the woman's auto ram into the back of a work truck that had stopped for traffic.

"I don't know what she was trying to do, but she just left the scene", one of the tourists, Shay Davis, told the Herald.

The collision happened on a sidewalk along Northeast 163rd Street and 22nd Avenue.

The Miami Beach police force changed its policies in 2014 to prohibit officers from shooting at a moving auto, unless someone inside that vehicle brandishes a weapon or shoots first.
