Stephen Paddock shot security guard before firing on Las Vegas concert

Stephen Paddock shot hotel security guard Jesus Campos before - not after - he massacred 58 people, as Las Vegas police revised their timeline of the October 1 shooting.

On Monday, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Campos was responding to a report of an open door when he heard drilling from the room of the shooter.

When Campos got shot at 9:59 p.m., he immediately alerted the police. Campos had been investigating an alarm that went off in another room on the same floor, signaling that a door had been left open.

At 10:05 p.m., the shooting began that left dozens dead and hundreds injured in what is being described as the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

U.S. authorities have received more than 1,000 tips, but are still struggling to determine what motivated Paddock, who did not have a criminal record, to carry out the carefully planned attack.

Police also said that the shooting only lasted 10 minutes, when they previously said it lasted for 11 minutes.

British Prime Minister Theresa May arrives at 10 Downing Street in London, Monday, Oct. 9, 2017. The PM hailed the audit as a "world first" but admitted the "findings will be uncomfortable".

Mr Lombardo said new information had emerged during the investigation and that "some things were bound to change" given its complicated nature.

"I think they prevented a thousand deaths, and I think it's important for the American public to understand that", Lombardo said yesterday. "They are minute changes..."

That raises questions about what the killer had been planning before Campos disturbed him, and why police did not arrive sooner.

At least 23 guns - 12 of which were equipped with bump stocks, or rapid-fire devices - were found inside Paddock's hotel room.

Bitsko said it was "like a deadly game of hide and seek, " and thought " 'Man, I wish I had my dog with me, ' because, you know, it's nice to have him lead a team".

Lombardo said also police have found "no evidence to show there was a second shooter".

Mr. Paddock might have believed that the chaos caused by the shooting "would have enabled the first responders to be directing their attention in other locations, which would enable Mr. Paddock to just leave the hotel", Sheriff Lombardo said.

Police said at the time that after injuring the guard, Paddock stopped firing into the crowd.

"We have uncovered over 200 instances of the suspects' traveling throughout Las Vegas and he has never been seen with anyone else", Lombardo said.

Lombardo said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is still evaluating Paddock's mental state.

"In coordination with the FBI's behavioral analysis unit, a comprehensive picture is being drawn as to the suspect's mental state and now we do not believe there is one particular event in the suspect's life for us to key on", Lombardo said.

"We believe he chose to take the lives he did, and he had a very purposeful plan that he carried out", Lombardo said.
