Govt approves 7th Pay Commission benefits to Varsities' teachers/ staffs

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementations of the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission.

However, a year ago the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission and the pay hike get allowance by the Union Cabinet for raising the minimum pay from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000 per month.

Cabinet has approved revision of pay scales for about 8 lakh teachers and other equivalent academic staff.

The new pay scale will be effective from 1st January 2016. Hiking college teachers' pay in accordance to the recommendations of 7th Pay Commission will make it increase in the the range of Rs 10,400 and Rs 49,800, according to a government statement, in comparison to the existing entry pay put into effect by the 6th Central Pay Commission for the pay of teachers.

The revised pay package will also be extended to teachers at 119 centrally-funded technical institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) and IIITs. "We must attract talent into academics", Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said.

The Centre's annual financial liability on account of the teachers and other staff pay hike would come about Rs 9,800 crore, the Government.

"This amounts to an increase of around 22% - 28%", Javadekar said in the briefing. However, he said that the government is extending this benefit to teachers who forsake the lure of corporate sector to stay in government job guided by a sense of duty.

Adding: "For state government-funded institutions, the revised pay scales will require adoption by the respective governments".
