In Central Ohio, that will mean Boy Scout dens - which are the smallest group and broken up by grade-level - will be separated by gender.

"Those dens can then do things as a pack", he said.

Hyland said she does support families who choose to sign their girls up for the Boy Scouts, but she hopes people see the value in what the Girl Scouts have built for more than 100 years. This inclusive, all-girl space empowers them to take the lead in all aspects of their lives.

As The Two-Way reported in August, the Boy Scouts had for months been "exploring the benefits of bringing Scouting to every member of the family - boys and girls", according to spokeswoman Effie Delimarkos. Boy Scout leaders say the change was needed to provide more options for parents.

Girl Scouts officials have suggested the move was driven partly by financial problems and a need to boost revenue. From a peak of over 5 million members in the 1970's there are now under two and a half million boys in scouting.

"She loves outdoors and she was jealous when I went to summer camp and all the stuff that I learned", he said.
