The statement contradicts an earlier claim from Australia's transport minister that the company had entered into a "no find no fee" arrangement with the Malaysian government. They had been pressing the government to accept Ocean Infinity's offer to find answers to one of aviation's biggest mysteries. "We favour Ocean Infinity", he said.

The autonomous vehicles travel up to 7 miles per hour, which is about twice as fast as towed sonar, and they are more maneuverable, said Al Diehl, a former crash investigator for the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

But Ocean Infinity will no doubt be taking some risk by spending time and energy on the search.

The plane has yet to be recovered, with only small pieces of debris surfacing periodically.
