Tigers hire Ron Gardenhire; Alex Cora to Red Sox?

The Detroit Tigers plan to hire Ron Gardenhire as their new manager, The Athletic reported Thursday night.

The 59-year-old Gardenhire, who spent the 2017 season as the bench coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, would bring ample experience into the dugout of a young Tigers team embarking on what could be a lengthy rebuild.

Two playoff bench coaches, Dave Martinez with the Cubs and Alex Cora with the Astros, were likewise on Detroit's interview list.

However, one southern city might just house the key to winning the HQ2 race. "Today was an exciting day", said Gann. Other Canadians bids are expected to include Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Ottawa, Edmonton and Calgary.

Gardenhire is considered a players' manager, but hopefully not the type who will continue to use a closer who has clearly lost his ability to do the job, like Ausmus did with Francisco Rodriguez. He went 1,068-1,039 (.507) with the Twins in 2002-2014.

Detroit fired Brad Ausmus shortly after the season after the Tigers struggled to a 64-98 record. The team initially began with a list of 50 candidates.

Gardenhire took a year off from baseball before he was hired by the Twins as special assistant. He was the 2010 AL Manager of the Year and was the runner-up on five occasions, but was sacked after four straight seasons of 90 or more defeats.

Anthem continues to polarize players
They say, "it prompts real conversation", but the resulting conversations I've heard don't address civil rights. Over the course of about 20 minutes before the press, Goodell used the same two words no fewer than 45 times.

It was Gardenhire's Twins that slipped into first place on the last day of the 2006 season, costing the Tigers a division title they had seemed certain to win. He missed about a month early in the season after undergoing surgery to remove his cancerous prostate.

Gardenhire won't have an easy task ahead of him if he's to lead the Tigers to the postseason anytime soon.

However, former United midfielders Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, speaking as TV pundits for ITV and BT Sport respectively, have backed Mourinho. "Going from winning [the league] on a regular basis, to now coming off it has got them in that much of a panic".
