Unemployment rates stable for September, still low


The U.S. unemployment rate for September was 4.2 percent, down from 4.4 percent in August, and down from 4.9 percent in September 2016. A year ago, the rate was 3.0 percent in September.

The county's unemployment rate barely moved in September, as seasonal jobs gains in education were offset by job losses in the hospitality and leisure industries, said Brian Rooney, a Eugene-based labor economist with the Employment Department.

Unemployment in the Mid-Hudson Valley remained relatively stable in September compared to the same month previous year, according to statistics from the state labor department.

The September rate was significantly lower than the September 2016 rate of 5.2 percent, the department said. The City of Newburgh had a 5.6 percent rate of joblessness.

Ohio's non-agricultural wage and salary employment increased 10,500 over the month, from a revised 5,546,500 in August to 5,557,000 in September 2017, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with ODJFS.

Employers in Colorado added 4,000 nonfarm payroll jobs from August to September, for a total of 2.66 million jobs, according to the report. Putnam rose by 0.1 percent and Ulster was down by 0.2 percent in September 2016.

The poll also showed a majority of Republicans favoring legalization for the first time, with 51 percent expressing support. Many other states allow marijuana use for medicinal purposes under laws with varying degrees of strictness.

The estimated number of countians with jobs increased by 100, to 45,100, while the estimated number of unemployed dropped by 200, to 2,600. Employment gains are concentrated in private sector businesses, in particular, transportation, warehousing, and utilities; professional and business services; and wholesale trade. Private-sector job loss drove all of that contraction, with those jobs decreasing by 600 to 19,700. Job gains over the past year are concentrated in construction, professional and business services, health services, and manufacturing. In May, Linn County's unemployment dipped to 4.1 percent, the lowest mark since OR began tracking county-by-county data in 1990.
