Massive recall for Kidde fire extinguishers

Massive recall for Kidde fire extinguishers

In 2014, extinguishers failed to function as they should for emergency personnel responding to a fiery vehicle wreck. Also, the nozzle can come off with enough force to pose an injury hazard.

On November 2, Kidde announced a recall on their fire extinguishers with plastic handles due to failure to discharge and nozzle detachment.

Emergency responders could not get the recalled Kidde fire extinguishers to work.

Consumers who have purchased one of the recalled extinguisher models should contact Kidde immediately for instructions on how to return the recalled unit and to request a free replacement fire extinguisher. In total, 40.5 million fire extinguishers manufactured from 1973 to 2017 are being recalled. More information and the specific model numbers recalled can be found at the US CPSC website. "I urge all Missourians to check all their fire extinguishers so they can be confident they will work when needed". Still, local fire officials are urging property owners to check all their extinguishers.

"An extinguisher is only going to last 8 to 10 seconds, those seconds are critical and you need to make sure all the components are working 100 percent of the time", said Kayla Cross, Assistant Fire Marshal.

The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and they are either ABC- or BC-rated.

Certain models were recalled back in 2009, and again in 2015.
