Legendary Italian Midfielder, Andrea Pirlo Retires From Football

Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has brought the curtain down on a glittering career after announcing that he is retiring from soccer.

The 38-year-old made the announcement on his official Twitter account (h/t BBC Sport) after completing his stint with Major League Soccer side New York City FC. Most commonly remembered for his time with #juventus and AC Millan, the man simply nicknamed "Maestro" made 116 appearances for #italy.

'You will always be on my side and in my heart'. He set a record for the youngest player ever to play a top flight league game for that side. Throughout his career, Pirlo impressed millions - and holds a very strong claim for being one of the best of his generation purely through his passing ability and vision - not to mention his deadliness from dead ball situations.

After the final win, in May 2011, he revealed he would not be renewing his contract with the club and chose to join Juventus instead.

Making over 400 appearances, Pirlo played alongside the likes of Clarence Seedorf, Kaka, and Ronaldinho.

At Milan he would win the Champions League twice and Serie A twice.

Pirlo's greatest achievement undoubtedly came in 2006. He scored the first penalty in the 2006 World Cup Final, helping Italy capture its first global title in 24 years.

Andrea Pirlo's 22-year career came to an end on Sunday night.

Pirlo would then move to New York City, where he helped establish one of MLS's newest franchises. Unsurprisingly, Piro shone and flourished in his new position.

Back in October, Pirlo revealed plans to hang up his boots at the end of the MLS season.
