In what has become the most visible sign of change to come out of the elections, two transgender women have won decisive victories in Virginia and Minneapolis.

After campaigning on raising the minimum wage, developing affordable housing, and treating youth violence as a public health issue, Jenkins won in a landslide, pulling over 73 percent of voters' first choice votes.

Jenkins was officially elected to the Minneapolis City Council on Tuesday, November 7th. Extraordinarily happy right now, ' she said.

A similar fate befell Joanne Marie Conte (1933-2013), whose adversaries collected money to oust her identity as a transgender woman after she won a seat on the Arvada, Colorado, City Council in 1991. She defeated transphobic Republican incumbent Bob Marshall for a spot in the House of Delegates.

Andrea Jenkins is the new Minneapolis City Council member for Ward 8. However, she also a transgender activist and curator of the Transgender Oral History Project at the University of Minnesota, where she's interviewed nearly 200 people about their experiences as transgender and gender nonconforming people. There were 18 openly transgender candidates that ran in the 2017 and there are 11 running in 2018 elections, according to a list compiled by Harvard researcher Logan Casey. Earlier in the week, she said: "If transgender people are being attacked, you need transgender voices to respond to those attacks".

It was a history making night in the United States with Virginian Democrat, Danica Roem, becoming the first trans woman to win a state seat.

"Having transgender people elected in public office means we'll be able to make policies and direct conversations in ways that can ensure equity and fairness and justice for transgender people", she said. "That just shows how respected she is from her lifetime, decades of work, but also how she is someone who brings a glue, who brings a sense of connectedness, and, frankly, I think that's something the city needs right now".
