Virginia's newly-elected openly transgender state representative

Many incumbent House seats flipped from red to blue last night (Tuesday 11/7). Bob Marshall, a 13-term incumbent and socially conservative lawmaker who proudly called himself Virginia's 'chief homophobe'.

"Our great Commonwealth has had many significant electoral firsts, and it's no surprise the diverse and welcoming citizens of Prince William County have chosen to elect the first transgender candidate to any state's legislative body".

Two for you Virginia, and none for Bob Marshall bye. Earlier this year, he introduced a "bathroom bill" that would require people to use restrooms that match the gender on their birth certificate.

During the campaign, Marshall refused to use Roem's correct pronouns. Jenkins, who is an activist, artist, and mother, said she looked forward to the chance to "speak truth to power".

Prior to running for office, Roem worked as a journalist.

Andrea Jenkins won a council seat in Minneapolis with roughly 73 per cent of the vote.

Roem's victory still came as a surprise to many, though she won by almost 10 percent. He held that position for the past 25 years. She also described herself as a poet, writer and performer.

Stephe Koontz won a spot on the the Doraville City Council, just northeast of Atlanta, becoming the city's first transgender elected official. Marshall has served in the state legislator for a whopping 26 years.

The race had become divisive recently as campaign fliers popped up with a picture of Bhalla in his turban that read "Don't let TERRORISM take over our town", reported NJ.com. Durkins will be Seattle's first openly lesbian mayor, and only the second in the country.

What's more, she's also the city's first female mayor since the 1920s, something she joked about after she was declared mayor-elect.
