California NAACP wants to remove "Star Spangled Banner" as National Anthem

California NAACP wants to remove

Democratic Missouri Rep. Lacy Clay stopped short of calling for a ban, but told The Daily Caller the group has "a right to object to any stances in the national anthem that they find objectionable and racist". Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the anthem in an effort to bring attention to the black men killed by police and other racial injustice in the country.

Trump was harshly critical of Kaepernick during his campaign, and recently called for National Football League owners to fire players who participate in the protest. But Huffman said Kaepernick's message was lost when it turned into a debate about the flag.

"Just bending a knee forced us to go back and look at a lot of things", Huffman said. There is a very significant reason that the third stanza isn't sung, and to some the song is bigger than the meaning in the part that's forgotten.

"It's racist", she said of the national anthem.

Huffman's request prompted a response from right-wing political commentator Bill O'Reilly, who took to Facebook Thursday and called the NAACP's assertion "simply outrageous". But Muwakkil said replacing the "Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem isn't an issue he will pursue. "It's racist. It doesn't represent our community".

O'Reilly suggested that the NAACP is misunderstanding the historical context of the song, pointing out that the writer, Francis Scott Key, was inspired by the Battle of Baltimore when he penned the lyrics.

Billie's cellphone was found in a dumpster hours after she disappeared and her auto was found in a nearby street five days later. But Brown told agents he blacked out and had no recollection of his actions for several days after that, the release said.

The California and Hawaii NAACP hope that California lawmakers forward the resolution on to Congress, and "The Star-Spangled Banner" is replaced with a more inclusive song. During an Alabama rally in September, Trump referred to protesting players as "sons of bitches".

James Muwakkil, chair of the Lee County NAACP chapter, said he understands why the NAACP in California is upset about the lyric. Fans are pictured standing during the anthem on Apr.4, 2003 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
