Anderson County school honors veterans with annual ceremony

Melonas said each year, students and staff create an "honor wall" as a tribute to veterans.

The assembly also featured a fife and drum duo playing "Amazing Grace" while students and veterans remembered friends and family that have served in the US military.

Dean said OH is home to more than 800,000 veterans, and encouraged students and others in attendance at the event to honor and respect those who have served.

"These people fought for your freedoms to live peacefully so I think that's something kids need to know where your freedoms and amendment rights come from", said Kasey Bolt, Air Force Veteran.

Shortly after the tragedy, Hurst vowed to honor her memory by covering issues of gun violence and mental illness. Parker's parents were "thrilled" to be a part of the cheering crowd and to watch Hurst accomplish his goal.

"We've got parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles".

"We wanted students to take a more active role as this is part of their leadership training and development", said Lt. Col. Erik Pettyjohn, Air Force (retired), who leads the JROTC program.

"I think there is far more interest shown. but we all owe a lot to the "Greatest Generation" from World War II", he said.
