(Neb)-It's Veterans Day - Or At Least The Legal Holiday

Trump, marking the holiday in Vietnam with many valiant Vietnam War veterans, noted that measures enacted recently are created to improve accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs, reform the VA appeals process and expand the GI Bill.

The United States holds its annual celebration honoring our veterans of all America's wars today, because the fighting in World War One ended at the 11th hour or the 11th day of November in 1918 with an armistice between the warring parties. They have bravely answered the call to serve in the finest military force in the world, and they have earned the dignity that comes with wearing the uniform and defending our great flag.

Of course, the world wasn't free from violent German imperialism and expansionism for long.

Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 558,000 are still alive. More than 400,000 American soldiers were killed, while another 670,000 were wounded.

With many Americans - including many from the Kenai Peninsula - now serving, and with our area home to many more veterans, let's use Saturday's observances as a reminder not just to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans today, but to continue to work toward meeting the needs of veterans every day.

Thanking a veteran for his or her service to our nation is a simple but effective way of showing appreciation for the selfless sacrifices of our nation's veterans.

Veterans Day is a US legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

On Nov. 11, 1918, Wilson declared, "The arbitrary power of the military caste of Germany, which once could secretly and of its own single choice disturb the peace of the world, is discredited and destroyed". But the war came, and American soldiers courageously took up arms once again.

Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November).
