IT raids on Sasikala clan, associates, businesses enters third day

At least 100 bank accounts of shell companies allegedly managed by Vivek Jayaraman have been frozen, I-T sources told the Times of India (TOI) on Saturday.

For the third consecutive day, Income-Tax sleuths continued their raids at the properties of the Mannargudi clan across the state.

The full volume of cash and documents seized would be known only after the completion of the raid in all the targetted premises.

The official said the department waited for the individuals and companies associated with Sasikala to file their tax returns for the year and based on the filing and the data with the IT department, the searches was carried out to detect tax evasion.

The raids are on at 40 places including Jaya TV office in Ekkathuthangal, MIDAS distillery near Tambaram owned by Sasikala and Jazz theatres.

The raid covered residences of Sasikala's husband M Natarajan in Thanjavur, her brother VK Dhivakaran, her nephews TTV Dinakaran and Dr Venkatesh.

These raids were conducted after media reports of alleged tax evasion surfaced. Jaya TV premises in Chennai and Dhinakaran's farm house were searched as part of 'Operation Clean Money, ' under which premises belonging to ten Income Tax assessee groups were searched. "We recorded statements from them, they claimed that violence was used to grab these properties", an I-T source said. Subsequently, the number of officials carrying out the task shrunk with the conclusion of the searches at some premises. The tax allegation covers aspects like shell companies, dubious investments, fund flow, and fudging of accounts.

On Thursday, a team of around 1,800 officials launched the massive search exercise at 187 premises connected to Sasikala's kin in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi.

He is a supporter of former AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala.

Meanwhile, Members of Congress celebrated outside MP Congress Committee as its candidate Nilanshu Chaturvedi leads in by-poll. Taking to Twitter, Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala thanked voters for reposing faith in the party.
