United halts Newark-Delhi flights on poor air quality

As smog envelops Delhi giving rise to poor visibility and health hazards, the United Airlines on Saturday temporarily suspended its flight originating from Newark to New Delhi for a few days, as reported by news agency ANI.

Earlier, the airline was offering waivers on rescheduling tickets.

The airline announced its decision on Friday, days after the air quality in New Delhi was rated hazardous, saying it would cancel flights from Newark, N.J., set to arrive on Saturday and Sunday, the Business Standard reported.

"We are monitoring advisories as the region remains under a public health emergency and are coordinating with respective government agencies". They issued a travel waiver on Thursday according to which customers travelling to Delhi between November 9 to November 13 can book a comparable ticket leaving on or before November 18 at no additional cost.

United Airlines customers have been asked to check its website or download the mobile app for latest updates.

Through the crisis in New Delhi, schools have been temporarily closed, trucks prohibited from entering, and industrial activity halted. However, the odd-even plan will not come into force from Monday as the Delhi government has refused to go ahead with it after the National Green Tribunal scrapped nearly all exemptions, including those to women drivers and two-wheelers.
