'Several' killed after U.S. airstrike on Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia

US forces carried out the operation in coordination with Somalia's federal government, according to a press release from the United States Africa Command.

The latest US drone strike was carried out in coordination with Somalia's government, the USA statement said.

GO has learned, citing local residents that the raid took place near Sanguuni Village, north of Bula-Gadud town, both located on the outskirts of the port city of Kismayo, some 500Km south of Mogadishu.

Separately, Somalia's Information Minister Abdirahman Osman on Saturday said 81 al-Shabab fighters were killed in an operation by Somali security forces in Jilib district, with the extremists' camp there destroyed.

"Al-Shabaab is publicly committed to planning and conducting attacks against the United States and our partners in the region", it said, vowing to intensify airstrikes against the militants in Somalia.

Saturday's airstrike at Gaduud was the 4th attack in Somalia, killing almost 100 militants.

Somali nationals protest al-Shabaab extremists following last month's truck bomb that killed more than 350 people. It was Somalia's worst-ever attack and one of the world's deadliest in years.

On Sunday, a spokeswoman for the US military command in Africa announced that the strikes were carried out over the weekend near Mogadishu, killing several militants. Al-Shabaab was blamed for the attack. The IS group has emerged in Somalia over the past two years and many of its fighters have defected from al-Shabab.
