California shootings at multiple sites kill 5, injure kids at school

A shooting that took place at an elementary school and other locations Tuesday in northern California claimed the lives of at least three people, said a sheriff's office spokesman. He confirmed two children were also shot and wounded, and officials were processing seven or more crime scenes.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said that around one hundred law enforcement personnel were investigating five separate scenes relating to the incident.

An officer told ABC News the shooter, who wielded two handguns and a semi-automatic rifle, appeared to randomly pick his targets.

Brian Flint told local media his neighbor was the shooter and had stolen his truck.

Enloe Medical Center said it had four patients from the shooting - one adult and three children. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything".

The elementary school is located on the outskirts of Corning, an olive oil-producing town of around 8,000 people about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the state capital Sacramento.

Once police secured the school they transported all the students on a bus to a secure location. The FBI confirmed to CBS News they are sending agents from Sacramento, Redding, and Chico to assist with the investigation. Johnston said the school had been cleared by 10 a.m. but he did not have any information about the victims there.

Sheriff Johnston declined to release the name of the shooter but said the gunfire began with a domestic violence incident that neighbours reported.

The shooting apparently did not start at the school.

The roommates lived close to the gunman, and he said that the gunman was firing off rounds.
