Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne facing up to three months out after back surgery

Nathaniel Clyne will not return for Liverpool until the new year after undergoing back surgery.

Gordon's words will be of no comfort to Liverpool fans, or manager Jurgen Klopp.

But the 26-year-old is finally on the road to recovery and is expected to make a return to first team action in February.

Clyne is yet to feature for the Reds this season, and played just 45 minutes in their 4-0 pre-season friendly win away to Tranmere Rovers in July.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the full-back underwent a corrective operation in London.

Since then Klopp has lead Liverpool into the Champions League on the back of a top-four finish last season, but this season has seen all their old inconsistencies return and some are even claiming the club are going backwards despite the club now being on course to reach the knock-out stages.

This has meant that should have Clyne returned earlier he would ineligible to play in any of the club's group stage European games.

Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been deployed at right-back by Klopp in his absence while Tottenham's Kieran Trippier has been favoured by Gareth Southgate in the England set-up.

The pair have tended to switch between playing league and cup competitions, with Gomez being played in the league and Alexander-Arnold in the cup. The former has impressed for the Anfield outfit and his display saw him being called up to England's senior side for the first time.
