WFU ranks seventh in percentage of students studying overseas

A survey of almost 500 campuses showed a decline of 7% in newly arriving foreign students, according to The Times, which referenced data from the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Even though fewer new foreign students started this year at US colleges, there was a relatively large pool of other students already taking part in degree programs and choosing to stay for additional training, said Sharon Witherell, a spokeswoman for the institute.

"I don't think we've had anybody tell us that because of the ideas of the administration that we're not going to send our students to the United States". The year before that, the increase was even larger: 8 percent.

Many colleges have been bracing for steep declines amid fears that the White House's travel ban proposals and separate reports of violence against immigrants would discourage students considering schools in the U.S. This implies an increase of 35,000 students than the previous year on non-immigrant student visas.

The University of Cincinnati ranked second in the state with 4,013 foreign students.

The nationwide number of American students studying overseas in 2015 increased by 4 percent from the prior year to 325,339. "The report tracks every student coming from overseas but it doesn't include exactly why or why not the numbers fell".

India was the second-biggest country of origin, with more than 186,000 students, a number that rose by 12 percent over 2015-16. Brazil saw a 32 percent drop in total students enrolled in US colleges and Saudi Arabia saw a 14 percent drop in total students attending USA institutions.

Overall, there was a 3.4 percent increase in total global student enrollment in 2016 compared to the year before, with the total of 1,078,822 exceeding 1 million for the second year. Forty-five percent of colleges reported a decline in worldwide enrollment. In the students perspective, they get the best education and looking from the side of the institutions, they get the best students from India. This is the first decline since Open Doors has reported new enrollments. Institutions are concerned about recruitment for Fall 2018, particularly from the Middle East and North Africa and Asia.

"In addition to sending more students overseas than ever before, we have also been focused on enhancing the intercultural learning experience of our students while they are abroad", said Michael Brzezinski, dean of worldwide programs.

On individual USA campuses, however, the enrollments from foreign students were all over the map. The global students who come learn with us in the Phoenix area thrive at ASU, and we are grateful to be able to share in their educational experience.
