Being more careful not to use antibiotics unless completely necessary. TDH encourages patients and their medical providers to communicate closely to ensure that the reason antibiotics are or are not prescribed in a particular situation is clear and well understood.

That means that antibiotics may not work when you really need them.

Staff and students are invited to drop off any unwanted antibiotics at the stands on each of the days, with the drugs disposed of by the HPRU in Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance team. The guidelines still allow for routine use of antibiotics in animals that aren't sick.

This week is World Antibiotic Awareness Week (November 13 to 19) and Friday is European Antibiotic Awareness Day, and in support, the local NHS is advising people against the use of antibiotics for coughs, colds and flu. It is also used during surgeries and in animal husbandry. Unfortunately, new antibiotics are not easily developed and treatment options are decreasing.

The Arkansas Department of Health has partnered with the CDC to promote smart use of antibiotics. "If we overuse or misuse them, they eventually will no longer be effective against bacterial infections". Of those, 23,000 people will die from the infection.
