170 firefighters battle fire in 6-story apartment building

The fire is on the top floor of a six-story building, the FDNY said.

The fire started on the Harlem building's top floor, which was engulfed in flames as thick smoke billowed.

Heavy smoke and orange flames could be seen pouring through the building's roof, with strong wind making the blaze hard to contain.

The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. on Broadway and West 144th Street in Hamilton Heights.

The FDNY told DailyMail.com that winds contributed to the quick spread of the fire, and firefighters had to be evacuated over fears the structure could still collapse.

At least 100 firefighters are at the scene battling the fire.

More than 250 firefighters responded to the fire that displaced at families and injured nine people, including seven firefighters, one police officer, and one civilian. One resident was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

"They started screaming all over the place, 'It's a fire!" Two have reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The building covers a large part of the city block.

Authorities urged pedestrians to stay away from the area after pieces of the building began falling onto the street after the roof collapsed.
