Hospital declares newborn twins dead, family finds one alive

In an incident, premature twins were allegedly declared dead by this private hospital and were handed in a polythene bag to their parents who realized that one of them is alive only when they were on way to perform the last rites.

A case has been registered under IPC Section 308, which deals with attempt to commit culpable homicide and is punishable by up to seven years in jail.

The hospital had reportedly handed over the two "dead" infants - one of the twins, a girl, was stillborn - to the parents wrapped in plastic bags on Thursday night.

"After they were declared dead, the babies were given to us in packets". The baby and its twin had been handed over to their family in a packet. "We ripped it open, found bits of plastic and the baby inside, breathing", the grandfather said. After we traveled three kilometers, we felt a movement in one [bag]. The hospital administration has admitted to negligence and sent the doctors concerned on leave.

"On the other hand, the Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the matter".

"It is very unfortunate".

Both the Centre and the Delhi Government immediately took cognisance of the matter with the latter ordering an enquiry into the incident, seeking a preliminary report within 72 hours.

CM Kejriwal ordered ordered an inquiry and and tweeted that "strongest action" would be taken.

It is not almost the first case of a living person mistakenly being declared dead - not even in the modern era of medical science.

Police, in a statement, said, "Yesterday, we received a call at Shalimar Bagh Police Station".

"She was admitted there on November 28. The doctors had told the family that she was serious and the chances of survival of the twins were slim, as she was six months pregnant", the statement added.

Varsha had given birth to a boy and a girl. "We are shaken and concerned at this rare incident", it said.

The twins were born 22 week prematurely, and were frail, but whatever reason was given by the doctor to announce the death of a live baby, it should still be investigating and such horrifying scenarios should be avoided in future. The other baby was still-born.

While the baby, which was found to be alive is now under medical supervision at a hospital in Pitampura, Max Hospital claimed that it was "in constant touch" with the parents and providing "all the needed support".
