Person of Interest Questioned on Teacher Shooting

According to officials, Curtis showed "no emotion" when he was told of the charge.

Friday morning, the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said Joshua R. Curtis had been charged with first degree assault in connection with the shooting. Curtis was arrested Thursday.

The freakish turn of events began Wednesday afternoon when a 36-year-old male teacher was jogging on a trail in the conservation area, which is near the Missouri River and about 25 miles west of St. Louis. The teacher is identified in court documents only by his initials, C.W. Right after they saw one another, the other man pulled a gun and opened fire on the teacher, striking him once in the back. He was described as a while male in his 30s or 40s, wearing a black coat and tan trousers. The stranger did not acknowledge the teacher.

Police said school administrators sent the teacher to the school district's human resources department and both students home with their parents prior to police arrival.

The teacher flagged down the first vehicle he saw on the highway. Soon thereafter, the man was spotted by police.

Lohmar also said they have seen no overt indications Curtis is mentally ill.

The next morning, the mother reported the little girl missing, an amber alert was issued and search teams were brought in to help. Crime Stoppers in Onslow County is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to finding the toddler.

Police said they recovered a spent 9 mm casing at the shooting scene. They also found a receipt from "Ultimate Defense" that was to Curtis' mother. They said they found a black bag from a gun range inside the tent that was capable of containing 100 rounds of ammunition. Since then, they family has had a falling out with Curtis and does not speak with him often.

Police searched Curtis' vehicle and found a locked safe underneath the driver's seat.

Police said the victim admitted to an assistant principal that she had performed fellatio on the teacher. It had been parked in different spots, including the parking lot on Highway D near where the tent was found.
