Amazon Marketplace launches with office products

Tech and retail behemoth Amazon has finally touched down for real in Australia, offering customers millions of products across more than 20 categories. Amazon expects to launch Prime shipping benefits in Australia in mid-2018 and from today.

Fowler adds: "Its more than online shopping, Amazon will force us to re-think content, media spend, digital and programmatic, customer service, and even our relationships with Australian retailers".

Customers can also track orders, contact customer service, read product reviews, or simply browse the growing selection at the time and place that suits them best.

With Amazon now in Australia, people are busily scouring the site for bargains. Local players with strong and established delivery networks and capabilities could potentially blunt the disruption that Amazon may cause.

Amazon Australia's free postage for orders $49 and over is a great deal, but some Australian retailers, such as OfficeWorks, may have a similar deal, so it's worth shopping around.

"The key thing about Amazon is their ability to fulfill" orders, said Mark Hollands, owner of Lifestyle Import, which sells household goods and other items online.

For third-party sellers, Amazon Australia is not now offering fulfilment services, however, this is expected to roll out sometime in the future.

Analysts remain split over whether Amazon will open a warehouse in New Zealand.

The giant e-tailer is promising one-day deliveries in most capital cities and 30% discounts on big-brand toys and clothing. Major populations can be 4,000 kilometres, driving up the cost of deliveries.

Amazon is valued at US$560 billion and recently bought Whole Food Markets in the United States as part of its online supermarket arm, Amazon Fresh.

"For Amazon's Marketplace to be successful in Australia, Amazon will need a good product range, including local specialty suppliers. I think this may prove hard", Power said.

There is, however, no news on whether or not Amazon Fresh will be delivering Aussies their groceries any time soon.

A number of well-known Australian brands including Bonds, Puma, Lego, L'Oreal and Sonos have already started selling on the Amazon Marketplace.

"While it can be a challenge to ensure potential customers find your website, Amazon already has hundreds of millions of customers around the world searching for new products".

However, Amazon says globally about half of the company's sales come from marketplace sellers.
