Bryan Singer reportedly canned from Freddie Mercury biopic

Bryan Singer reportedly canned from Freddie Mercury biopic

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, revealing that Singer is no longer attached to direct Bohemian Rhapsody, the musical biopic about the life and legacy of Freddie Mercury, after his erratic behavior allegedly brought production to a standstill late last week.

"Twentieth Century Fox Film has temporarily halted production on "Bohemian Rhapsody' due to the unexpected unavailability of Bryan Singer", said the studio in a statement". Actor Tom Hollander, who is slated to play the role of the band's manager Jim Beach, was also rumored to have left the film due to Singer's on-set behavior, though was persuaded to return. However, after he reportedly did not come back after the Thanksgiving holiday last month and cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel had to step in to take over the production on a few occasions, movie studio executives reportedly made a decision to fire him. When Sigel had to step in again, the studio chose to terminate Singer (who has a pay-or-play contract) and shut production down until they sorted the mess left by their wayward director. At one point, tensions apparently led to Singer throwing an object at Malek, although the two are said to have eventually resolved their conflict. Rumors swirled this past weekend that the film will likely stay on hiatus until the new year, though Fox insiders said the hope is to resume before then.

Fox promises a new director will be named soon.

However, this all occurred before Singer failed to show up on set after the Thanksgiving weekend. He has also reportedly done this on films like Superman Returns and X-Men: Apocalypse.

The trouble began when Singer was absent from production on several occasions. Bustle has reached out to reps for Singer for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

Bohemian Rhapsody now is scheduled to premiere in December 2018.
