In addition, fewer than 6,000 K-12 students are enrolled in a computer science course. In fifth grade, the students even write part of the code. Computer science can help nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. Students who are interested in coding can continue their education, as Harrisonburg High School offers two classes on it, as do some of the governors' schools in the area, including AP Computer Science.

Your participation will earn you an RCOE Hour of Code digital badge and a certificate of participation from UCR Extension. Computer science is foundational for every industry today, yet most schools don't teach it.

Kids who learn to code today will absolutely become the next generation of science and technology innovators. Under each block is a line of Java code and the students can "look under the hood" to see the actual code which is being used.

Also this week the girls are encouraged to post what they're learning about on social media using #girlsintechkc. "When students use technology to create something of their own design by coding, it builds both technical skill and confidence - both of which are critical for success in the future".

Elementary school students throughout the state are also participating independently in Hour of Code projects at various times during the week. Code.org, which has raised more than $60 million from Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and Salesforce, was one of the first companies to tap into the demand for preteen programming literacy.
