Rep. John Conyers Announces He's Retiring Today

Until Tuesday, Conyers held the distinction as the longest serving current member of the U.S. House of Representatives. We're used to it.

He said he's endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in Congress. Conyers faced calls to resign following reports that he reached a $27,000 settlement with a former aide who said she was sacked for rejecting his sexual advances.

A week after the report, second ex-staffer of the congressman also accused him of sexual harassment and several Congressional Black Caucus members urged him to resign.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee took to the House floor to read a letter by Conyers to his colleagues, saying he notified the Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi that he was vacating his seat.

Ian Conyers said although he supports his great-uncle, the longtime lawmaker should deal with the sexual misconduct allegations.

At least two structures have already burned and power outages have been reported across the county. One person died in a auto crash trying to evacuate the fire that first broke out Monday night.

Conyers said in the interview that this in no way will tarnish his legacy. "What is the difference?"

"It was sexual harassment, violating my body, propositioning me, inviting me to hotels with the guise of discussing business and then propositioning me for sex", Brown told NBC. Farenthold announced Monday that he would pay back the $84,000 in taxpayer dollars. "You don't have the right to talk about fixing it'".

Conyers, 88, confirmed the news on the Mildred Gaddis radio show, calling in from a hospital in Detroit recovering for a stress-related illness.

Word of Conyers' resignation was met with sadness among House Democrats, even though many had called on him to step down.

State Sen. Ian Conyers (D-Detroit), a great-nephew of the retiring Conyers, also has said he will seek to fill the seat.

The officer was wearing a protective vest and was transported to Central Texas Medical Center but died shortly after police said. They described him as a hard-working and well-liked member of the department and said he leaves behind a wife and four children.

Top Democrats, including Pelosi, have also called for. A few days later, she finally stated she believed Conyers should resign. Instead, CBC chair Cedric Richmond, D-La., said in a statement last week that "Any decision to resign from office before the ethics investigation is complete is John's decision to make".

"Whatever (the allegations) are, they are not accurate", he said.

But Conyers, who took his MI seat in 1965 and was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, insisted that his record would not be tarnished by the accusations. "They are not true and I think they are something that I can't explain where they came from".

"Whatever they are they are not accurate, they are not true, and I think that they are something that I can't explain where they came from", said Rep. Conyers.

"I don't have a comment on that", Butterfield said.

"This is about much more than one congressman", Grubbs' attorney, Lisa Bloom, said in an email after Conyers resigned. "I regret very seriously that John is having to leave under these circumstances, but I don't see it as don't see it as any different than anyone else that had put in the same position".
