Sunil Gulati: USA Soccer president resigns

Sunil Gulati announced on Monday that, as expected, he will not run for re-election as the President of the U.S. Soccer Federation.

"I spent a lot of time thinking about it, and talking about it with people in many different positions - many of whom told me I should run", Gulati said in an interview with ESPN's Sam Borden.

As the United States prepares to enter a year in which it will watch as 32 other nations contest the most important sports tournament in the world, its soccer efforts will also be under new leadership in 2018.

The United States men's soccer team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

Central Florida tabs Missouri coordinator Josh Heupel as coach
Athletic director Danny White says he believes UCF has "identified one of the brightest minds in college football " in Heupel. Heupel says in a statement that he is excited "to get a staff together and get to work with our wonderful student-athletes".

In addition to leading SUM, Carter, a former goalkeeper at UCLA, previously worked as a vice president in Major League Soccer and was a member of 1994 World Cup organizing committee. "The United States Soccer Federation needs new leadership that understands both business operations and the game".

The idea that Gulati may not run for re-election first surfaced in mid-October when he announced he would not resign his post at that time, but that he had not decided his intentions for the future.

Whilst Gulati did much to put the sport on the map in the United States, including the successful bid for the 1994 World Cup, next year's tournament is the first the USA will miss since 1986.

Primer: Here's how U.S. Soccer's presidential election works.

USC to Take on Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl
While making the actual four team playoff would have been nice, this is still a solid way for both teams to end their season. Sam Darnold and the USC Trojans have landed in the Cotton Bowl 2017 and will face off against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Notable candidates who have announced they will run to replace Gulati include current vice-president Carlos Cordeiro, former players and current media personalities Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino, and Boston attorney Steve Gans.

"I will empower [U.S. Soccer secretary general] Dan Flynn and the staff of the Federation to do the job they have been hired to do", she said.

Gulati will not be leaving the US Soccer landscape cold turkey. It's about four million registered players, referees, medical safety, grassroots stuff. "This is about me being the most qualified person to lead the federation into the next generation".

Gulati retains his seat on the FIFA Council and serves as the chairman for the U.S., Canada and Mexico bid to host the 2026 World Cup.
