Up to 20cm of snow forecast for parts of Cumbria

The forecaster said the storm - officially named Caroline, the thrid of the season - will bring strong winds to northern Scotland on Thursday.

Met Eireann today (Tuesday) issued a yellow weather warning for seven counties, including Donegal.

The counties now covered by the warning are Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry, but that may be broadened as the weather system nears our coast.

Scotland is expected to be hit by severe winds.

Warnings have been issued from both Met Éireann and the British Met Office concerning Storm Caroline's path over Ireland and Scotland.

Snow is expected to fall across many other parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western England on Friday, with between 2cm and 5cm likely in some areas.

The yellow "Be Aware" alert comes into force from 12.05am on Friday to 6pm on Saturday.

The warning, which was announced this afternoon, will remain in place until 8pm on Thursday evening.
