Germany: More than 40 injured in train crash

An estimated 50 people have been injured after a passenger train and freight train smashed into each other.

Meerbusch is a town approximately 10km outside of the German city of Dusseldorf. At the time of the crash there were 155 people. According to latest data, 47 people were injured.

However, reports are coming that the impact of the natural disaster was not so remarkable even many have not felt it. EMSC located the epicentre between the hill shrine of Kedarnath and the town of Pipalkoti in Uttarakhand.

The Meerbusch fire department said many passengers were trapped in the derailed train as rescue efforts were hampered by torn power cables that posed a risk for the rescue teams.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident. The local fire department have shared some of the first images from the scene online, showing the extent of the damage sustained in the collision.

The regional express train carrying passengers is run by the privately-owned British operator National Express, while the cargo train is operated by DB Cargo, it added.

A police spokesman told BILD: "Currently we cannot say how many injured it is".
