IIHS releases picks for safest cars of 2018

Two vehicle manufacturers-Hyundai and Subaru-garnered the lion's share of the highest-level safety awards for 2018 presented by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. According to Lund, this test was added when it became clear to the institute that some manufacturers weren't paying as much attention to passenger safety as much as they were to driver safety.

Toyota, Hyundai, and Subaru were among the brands that ranked highest in the ratings overall, although BMW and Mercedes-Benz also had several models on the list.

Instagram is testing a standalone app for direct messaging
The app is now available today in six countries: Chile, Israel , Italy , Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay, on both, iOS and Android. As of April 2017, Instagram Direct, still married to the Instagram app, had around 375 million active monthly users.

Only 15 vehicles qualified for what the institute calls its Top Safety Pick+. Toyota had the most vehicles on the top safety pick with 10 winning the award.

IIHS assesses a vehicle's crashworthiness with six tests: moderate overlap front, driver-side small overlap front, (new) passenger-side small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints and seats. "Our new test is to try to achieve that", explained IIHS President Adrian Lund. In addition, all cars must feature proactive crash prevention and advanced headlight technology.

Germany: More than 40 injured in train crash
An estimated 50 people have been injured after a passenger train and freight train smashed into each other. A police spokesman told BILD: "Currently we cannot say how many injured it is".

The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety says it's raising the bar for automakers, creating tougher test criteria to make sure vehicles can protect people in crashes and do more to help prevent crashes that can injure or kill. In order to qualify, model-year 2018 vehicles now need to have good-rated headlights and get a good or acceptable rating in IIHS' newest evaluation, the passenger-side small overlap front crash test.

And just a notch below was the Forester and Crosstrek earning the Top Safety Pick award when equipped with EyeSight and LED steering responsive headlights.
