Three dead in shooting at New Mexico high school

The sheriff's department said in a Facebook post that morning that Aztec High School was being locked down and evacuated.

Police are responding to reports of a shooting at Aztec High School in New Mexico.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that according to San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen, three people, believed to be students, are dead.

Aztec police chief Mike Heal told reporters that the suspect was down, without clarifying if "down" meant injured, dead or in police custody.

The shooting happened at Aztec High, a school with about 1,000 students near the Colorado border.

An estimated 50 people have been injured after a passenger train and freight train smashed into each other. A police spokesman told BILD: "Currently we cannot say how many injured it is".

Per the statement, the school will be placed on lockdown for roughly "three to four hours".

Aztec High School is a public high school in Aztec, New Mexico.

Two victims were students at Aztec High School and police said the gunman is also dead.
