PM Modi kicks off Meghalaya poll campaign

Revealing his intentions to develop Meghalaya as a top tourist destination, the prime minister said that the Central Government has earmarked around Rs100 crore for the said objective.

With regards to the state of infrastructure in Shillong airport, Modi said that bigger planes like Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 should land in Shillong airport. After inaugurating the 60-MW Tuirial hydropower project in Aizwal, he headed to Meghalaya's Shillong. This visit of PM is observed as he visited the state to blow the conch for the BJP campaign in the state as there are only two months left for the Assembly Elections.

Modi then travelled to Meghalaya capital Shillong, where he inaugurated the BJP's state office and inaugurated the 261-km long East West Corridor, which connects Shillong with Tura in Garo Hills region of the state. Travel time will be significantly reduced.

"The transformation by transportation is our motto", Modi said adding that construction of 4000 kilometers of National Highways has been sanctioned in the North Eastern region with a cost of Rs 32000 crore.

In Aizawl on Saturday, Modi called Mizoram the "gateway to southeast Asia" and said it would gain from the Centre's Act East policy.

Asserting that his government is committed to accelerate the pace of development in the northeast he said that central government has also started massive work on linking the northeastern states on rail and air link.

Expressing happiness over Meghalaya coming into railway map with Mendipathar-Guwahati railway, Modi lamented that even after 70 years of Independence, four crores households in the country are yet to have electricity.
