UN Security Council Considers Jerusalem Resolution

The United Nations Security Council is due to vote on Monday on a draft resolution calling for the withdrawal of U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, diplomats said, a move likely to face a Washington veto.

The leaked Egyptian-drafted resolution obtained by Al Jazeera, however, does not mention the United States by name, saying it "deeply regrets recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem".

Back in December 2016, the UNSC adopted a resolution that explicitly said the global community "will not recognize any changes to the 4 June 1967 lines, including with regard to Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the parties through negotiations".

Back to July 1980, Israel passed a law that declared Jerusalem as the united capital of Israel, but the United Nations Security Council responded with a resolution condemning Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem and declared it a violation of global law.

Draft resolution following Trump's declaration is unlikely to pass, facing a probable veto by the US. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has praised Trump's decision as "the just and right thing to do".

Weekend rain and milder highs
Highs will range throughout the week from mid to upper 40s and Thursday could be the warmest day next week in the mid-50s. Isolated storms with heavy rain and gusty wind are possible Monday and Tuesday with just showers likely Wednesday .

USA ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, one of the most prominent Israel supporters in a pro-Israel administration, has said she would cast a no vote against any resolution denouncing US policy on Jerusalem.

Since the decision, nine Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,900 people have been injured in protests in the occupied territories.

The Palestinians had sought a toughly-worded draft resolution that would have directly called on the U.S. administration to scrap its decision, but the final version was softened to draw maximum support.

"No vote or debate will change the clear reality that Jerusalem" is the capital of Israel, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said in a statement.

The text also calls on all United Nations member states not to move their diplomatic missions to Jerusalem.

US Vice President Mike Pence will visit Jerusalem on Wednesday, wading into the crisis over one of the most controversial issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank, however, see East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

In his address from the White House, Trump said that after repeated failures to achieve peace, a new approach was long overdue.

Israel captured East Jerusalem from Arab forces in the 1967 Middle East War and later annexed it in a move not recognized internationally.

He was also a member of Brazil's 2010 World Cup squad, where he ended the tournament with three assists despite not scoring. Kaka said that he would like to remain linked professionally to soccer, perhaps as a manager or sports director of a team.

Trump stressed that he still seeks peace between the Israelis and Palestinians and would still support a two-state solution as part of a lasting peace agreement.
