Sensex tops 34000 for first time, Nifty crosses 10500 in opening trade


At 1203 hours, the 30-share BSE index came back to its base level, down 14.19 points, or 0.04 per cent, at 33,926.11.

Mumbai: Taking a cue from global markets, the key Indian equity market indices on Tuesday opened higher after the extended Christmas weekend. Nifty was quoting at 10,502.70 points, up by 9.70 points or 0.09 percent.

The Nifty touched a new high of 10,515.10 points on an intra-day basis. The 50-scrip index settled at 10,531, up 38 points, powered by strong gains in metal and pharma stocks.

"Mid and small-cap outperformed on expectation of improvement in rural demand supported by continued government reforms", he added.

In another development, shares of Reliance Communications (RCOM) zoomed and closed nearly 30 per cent higher at Rs 21.33 per share after Reliance Group's Chairman Anil Ambani on Tuesday announced plans to reduce the company's debt by Rs 25,000 crore to Rs 6,000 crore. ONGC, TCS and GAIL were the major gainers in morning trade while Infosys, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and Lupin were losing the most.
