2 planes collide at Toronto airport; WestJet says passengers evacuated

Sunwing aircraft, which had no passengers and crew members, backed in the airport and collided with WestJet Flight 2425.

The aircraft was stationary and waiting for a gate when the Sunwing plane, which was being pushed back from the gate, ran into it.

No injuries on either plane were reported.

All passengers were then taken to the airport.

The panicked shouts and cries of those aboard were audible on one Instagram video shot by a passenger inside the WestJet plane.

Witnesses tweeted that flames could be seen coming from the tail of the Sunwing jet and posted pictures of firefighters around the tail section of the damaged plane.

Sunwing, part of the privately held Sunwing Travel Group, said there were no passengers or crew onboard its plane at the time of the collision, and that the aircraft was being towed by ground handler Swissport International Ltd.

Temperatures of -19 degrees Celsius, or around -2 degrees Fahrenheit, were recorded at the airport at 10 p.m. ET, Environment Canada said.
