BuzzAngle Music: 2017 Music Consumption Up 12.8%

Rap has surpassed rock to become the biggest music genre in the United States, according to the end-of-year report published by Nielsen Music. Meanwhile, streaming once again soared, leading the overall music industry to growth, largely due to the significant 58.7 percent increase in on-demand audio streams over previous year.

Rock was the top genre in terms of total album consumption (22.2% of total), followed by Rap/Hip-Hop (17.5%), and Pop (17.2%).

Rock music is not gone yet, however.

R&B/hip hop represented 24.5 per cent of all music consumption in the U.S. - the largest share and the first time it had led the measurement for a calendar year. Physical sales declined only 7%, while vinyl sales grew by 20.1% over 2016 and now comprises 10.4% of all physical album sales.

- Taylor Swift's Reputation had both the highest sales of 2017 and the fewest SEA totals among the year's top 10 (280,000).

Drake's More Life sits at the number four spot with 2.2 million total units.

While plenty of Trump's older tweets dabble in online harassment, it sounds like anything goes for world leaders so long as they're elected.

However, rap/hip-hop was tops for total song consumption at 20.9 percent, with rock close behind at 19.8.

Country is the fourth-largest genre, as its listeners produced 49 million units, or 7.7 percent of overall consumption units in 2017, an increase from 46.5 million consumption units in 2016. This year, 16 songs were streamed more than 500 million times, up from six in 2016 and just two in 2015. The previous record was held by "Panda" by Desiigner, which had 736.3 million streams in 2016. It saw a whopping 1.3 billion+ streams a year ago.

Latin music history was made when Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's Spanish-language smash "Despacito" and its crossover remix featuring Justin Bieber topped the Hot 100 chart. With that, the USA industry produced its first 1 billion-stream song in a single year, as Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" (featuring Justin Bieber) hit 1.3 billion total on-demand streams in 2017. "And vets Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Future all added new milestones to their careers with No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, including two for Future".
