Samsung scales The Wall with massive, modular, MicroLED TV

And by "smaller", we mean an 85-inch 8K QLED screen.

The modular, self-emitting MicroLED 146-inch TV display was featured alongside Samsung's latest innovations in display technology, demonstrating how television is evolving to offer consumers an outstanding viewing experience, while acting as a centralized connected smart hub to enhance everyday life. Being modular and bezel-less will allow consumers to customize their TV sizes and install them wherever needed.

This AI technology upscales standard definition (SD) content to 8K resolution, and employs a proprietary algorithm to adjust screen resolution after calculating the picture quality characteristics of each scene. The new technology, shown off in "The Wall" - a 146-inch TV prototype, unveiled at the company's First Look event at CES 2018 - uses individual pixel LED chips that produce their own light sources and, therefore, darker darks and brighter brights than its LED TVs have previously been capable. Its modular design means that the screen can be scaled up or down to fit the space available. Despite that size, The Wall is actually still touted to be "modular", thanks to its module-based designed and almost invisible bezels, allowing those who need it to build up an ever larger display of any size or shape. First it was LED, then OLED, then Quantum Dots, and now it's Micro LED. By using machine learning, Samsung thinks that its TVs can upscale that content and make it look better than past upscaling efforts have provided.

If this is all sounding a bit too familiar, it's because this was a technology that Samsung had demoed at last year's CES - but at the time was only referred to as a prototype that wouldn't likely see the light of day anytime soon.

"Screens are getting larger and as screens get bigger TV resolution becomes more important", said Samsung Electronics America Senior Vice President Dave Das. It can transform into any size, and delivers incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels. The 8K solution upgrades feature like detail enhancement, noise reduction, edge restoration, and automatic sound adjustment for different content.
