Now some AMD PC owners post crash reports

Microsoft's patch is created to address two serious design flaws in computer chips that can be used to steal sensitive data from your PC. To receive the Microsoft patch, an antivirus product has to set a Windows registry key on the computer.

By now Windows users should have received the patches Microsoft released yesterday to plug the widespread Meltdown bug and its companion Spectre, which expose most computers and phones to speculative execution side-channel attacks that affect chips from Intel, AMD, and Arm.

Vendors including Bitdefender, McAfee, and Trend Micro say they're still testing Microsoft's security update, though some versions of their software are ready.

To avoid causing widespread BSOD problems Microsoft opted to only push its January 3 security updates to devices running antivirus from firms that have confirmed their software is compatible.

On the support page, Microsoft explains that the update includes quality improvements.

For anyone whose machine has not yet attempted to install the update, other users say another option is to immediately disconnect the system from the internet, then pause Windows updates for 35 days - available in "Advanced Options" via "Windows Update Settings" - before reconnecting to the internet.

AMD chips aren't vulnerable to the Meltdown attack, but operating system updates could address one of the Spectre attacks it was vulnerable to.

Microsoft yesterday released the Meltdown and Spectre fixes as part of cumulative update for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, labelled KB4056892, which brings the OS Build up to 16299.192.

The update's appearance still depends on the antivirus program that the user employs to protect the computer. Even if that is successful, however, the operating system quickly attempts to reinstall the PC-freezing patch, they say.
