Study Links Ibuprofen to Male Infertility

Young men taking ibuprofen saw a coordination between luteinizing hormones (LH) - those that produce testosterone - and the level of ibuprofen in their bloodstream.

The findings by French and Danish researchers followed a six-week clinical study involving 31 men between the ages of 18 and 35.

The hormonal imbalance caused compensated hypogonadism, which is a condition linked to decreased male fertility, depression, and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or NSAIDs, that work by blocking the production of hormone-like signaling molecules called prostaglandins, which theoretically reduces pain and inflammation. A control group of 17 men took a placebo instead.

A new study suggests that some men who regularly take the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen could be doing serious damage to their testicles, or at least the stuff stored inside them, CNN reported Tuesday.

Those who took the ibuprofen were more likely to have indications of testicular problems - including a condition called compensated hypogonadism that affects reproductive health - meaning men are less likely to be able to father a child. After 14 days of ibuprofen use, the researchers observed higher blood levels of luteinizing hormone, which regulates the production of testosterone and other hormones. According to a recent study, however, regular consumption of the drug could lead to several side-effects, including male sterility. Otherwise, occasional use at the recommended dosage to treat aches and pains is safe and recommended.

Ibuprofen is a very common over-the-counter pain reliever that we've probably all taken at some point.

"Prescribing providers rarely mention these adverse effects with patients when prescribing these medications", she said, according to CNN, noting that the study was "important" and that the use of ibuprofen could have a far greater negative effect on men who already have low fertility. Every pregnant woman should consult or doctor before taking any of these three substances.

Ibuprofen may be linked to male infertility, a study has found, and although the effects were reversible the long-term effects are unknown.
