Trump to attend Davos economic forum: US administration official

President Donald Trump will attend the annual meeting of world financial elite in Davos, Switzerland, a celebration of globalization and free trade that runs counter to the "America First" populism he champions.

Anxiety over Trump's "America First" agenda dominated conversation at the World Economic Forum a year ago, though the incoming US administration eschewed sending any official representatives.

"The President welcomes opportunities to advance his America First agenda with world leaders", Sanders said Tuesday in a statement.

In response, Mrs May said it was "absolutely right that you should put your health first, for your sake and that of your family". She will now have to find a replacement at a time when she is already carrying out a major re-shaping of her top team.

In 2017, Chinese president Xi Jinping defended the idea of globalism in his keynote speech after Trump was elected president of the United States on a national-economic platform. Onetime Trump adviser Anthony Scaramucci also appeared in a panel at Davos previous year.

Yet a White House statement indicated Trump would not hesitate to bring his nationalist message to the assemblage of globalists.

Last year's WEF was dominated by reaction to Mr Trump's surprise election victory and his campaign.

Trump goes to Davos after backing out of a Pacific Rim trade agreement and repudiating the Paris Climate accord. Davos is scheduled to be held January 23-26.

This year's theme reflects the gathering's global flavor: "Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World".

Executives at the conference will welcome Trump's corporate tax cut and the regulatory slash his administration had enforced.
