Trump wants immigration compromise - and border wall

Top Republicans and Democrats came together at the White House Tuesday to hammer out a new immigration policy, but what made it unusual was that much of the meeting was broadcast on TV for everyone to see.

In a fascinating give-and-take, Democrats argued for a simple bill that only deals with DACA and illegal immigrant "Dreamers", while the President said again and again that he wants those items tied together, as it's clear most Republicans would not accept legislation which only focuses on stopping "Dreamers" from being deported.

Trump repeatedly supported the idea of the wall, but he began the meeting saying that he would back whatever bill Congress sends him.

Asked during the White House briefing by CNN's Jim Acosta whether Trump is demanding border wall funding in exchange for a DACA deal, Sanders would only say: "The President wants border security". Trump said. "We'll take an hour off and start". "And if you take it that further step, I'll take the heat, I don't care".

At one point, Sen. "You are not that far away from comprehensive immigration reform".

The lawyers noted that "importantly, none of the allegations contained in the indictment relate to Ms. Authorities arrested Harris Tuesday morning and charged her before a federal judge later in the day.

Trump then both endorsed doing comprehensive immigration reform sooner and later. Trump noted that a recent terror attack in New York City had been allegedly perpetrated by a man who entered the USA on a family-based immigration category.

"I would have more faith in the meeting if they would have people going who really knew the issue from our side", she said, adding that she was not criticizing Durbin.

A congressional aide told Reuters that negotiators in Congress also have been talking about legislation that would expand TPS in return for ending a visa lottery program that Republicans want to terminate.

"To me", Trump responded, "a clean bill is DACA and security".

Several Republicans pushed back at different points during the negotiations, including Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who said that no deal on Dreamers could be reached without attaching border security measures to it.

The immigration negotiations are part of a broader series of talks over issues ranging from funding the federal government through next September to renewing a children's health insurance program and giving USA territories and states additional aid for rebuilding following last year's hurricanes and wildfires. They were temporarily shielded from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which Trump is terminating on March 5.

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump opened up the curtain of Washington negotiations as he invited the press to stay for almost an hour and broadcast a Cabinet Room meeting with Democratic and Republican lawmakers Wednesday.

"I feel having the Democrats in with this is absolutely vital, because this should be a bipartisan bill". "Truly, it should be a bill of love and we can do that".

When Sen. Mazie Horono, D-HI, challenged Trump for supporting a border wall that would cost $18 billion, Trump countered, "We can do it for less".

"Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important talk about", he said, implying that the wall was little more than a well-marketed concept created to appeal to his voter base.
