Natural disaster in Caribbean prompts tsunami warning; no deaths reported

A powerful and shallow 7.6-magnitude natural disaster hit the waters off the coast of Honduras late Tuesday, triggering tsunami threats and advisories for nearby Caribbean shores, though there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Tsunami warnings were issued for the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Caribbean islands, Central America, and Mexico.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.8, was centered 125 miles (202 km) northeast of Barra Patuca in Honduras and 191 miles (307 km) southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands. The tremor occurred about 6 miles (10 kilometers) below the surface.

Meanwhile in Honduras, there were no early reports of damage on land following the quake.

The northern coast of Honduras closest to the quake's epicentre is sparsely populated, with much of it covered by nature reserves.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez urged citizens to "stay calm, report emergencies and follow the instructions of authorities".

The tsunami warning were in effect for two hours and then the advisories were withdrawn.

No tsunami warning was immediately issued.

In addition to Honduras, residents of Belize City and the Mexican state of Quintana Roo felt tremors, NBC reported. The situation in Puerto Rico has remained dire where many people are still lacking basic supplies and medicines they need to survive following a September 2017 hurricane.
